Tension in Benue community as gunmen kill three fisherwomen

Published on April 08, 2025 at 10:22 AM

Gunmen have killed three female fishermen in Tse Ijim, near Anyiin, Ukember Agya, Gaambetiev, in Logo Local Government Area of Benue State.

DAILY POST gathered that the three Tiv women were returning from the market along the Anyiin-Wukari road, which lies on the Benue State axis, when they were ambushed and killed by suspected Jukun militia.

An eyewitness, Teryila Abuur, confirmed to The Nation that the women were attacked and slaughtered by the gunmen while making their way home.

Logo LGA in Benue State borders Wukari LGA in Taraba State—an area that has been a hotspot for ongoing tensions between Tiv and Jukun communities for more than three decades.

The attack, which took place around 4 pm on Monday, caused widespread fear in the farming communities of Gaambetiev, as reported by local leader Chief Iorbee Fate.

There are concerns that this incident could escalate tensions and trigger fresh violence between Tiv and Jukun tribes in the boundary regions of Wukari and Logo LGAs.

At the time of this report, the bodies of the three women had been taken to Anyiin Health Centre. The police area command said it had not yet received a report regarding the incident.
