Following his election victory on Tuesday, Canada’s new prime minister, Mark Carney, has said that U.S. President Donald Trump will never achieve his aim of making Canada the U.S.’ 51st state.

The prime minister said this during his victory speech, claiming that Trump wanted to “break us.”;

Carney, a former central banker and political novice, led Canada’s Liberal Party to a fourth term in office.

Carney told election-night supporters that Trump wanted to “break us, so that America can own us,”; adding, “That will never, ever happen,”; to shouts from the crowd.

Carney pledged to reshape Canada’s relationships with other nations.

“We are over the shock of American betrayal, but we will never forget the lessons,”; he said.

Trump and Carney are expected to meet soon, as announced by the new prime minister’s office, which also disclosed that the U.S. leader has sent a congratulatory message.

The two leaders struck a more conciliatory tone and agreed to meet “in the near future,”; according to Carney’s office.

“The leaders agreed on the importance of Canada and the United States working together, as independent, sovereign nations, for their mutual betterment,”; it said.
