The Trailer For “Zola,” The Movie Based On A Twitter Thread, Is Here

Published on April 01, 2021 at 02:38 AM

Finally some good news! Forget what you heard about the impending White Boy Summer. That's cancelled. The trailer for Zola, the movie based on A’ziah “Zola”; Wells King’s epic 2015 Twitter thread, has finally arrived. James Franco was originally set to direct but then he died? Or moved to Siberia? Not sure what happened to him but Zola’s tale was ultimately directed by Janicza Bravo and stars Taylour Paige in the titular role, and Riley Keough as the white bitch she met at Hooters. Zola and her Twitter saga about an ill-fated ho’s up, pimps down Florida adventure has officially outlived James Franco’s directorial career.

According to Variety:

Based on the infamous Twitter thread posted by A’Ziah Wells King, the film follows a Detroit waitress named Zola (Taylour Paige) who strikes up a new friendship with a customer, Stefani (Riley Keough), who convinces her to join a weekend of dancing and partying in Florida. What at first seems like a glamorous trip full of “hoeism”; rapidly transforms into a 48-hour journey involving a nameless pimp, an idiot boyfriend, some Tampa gangsters and other unexpected adventures.

The idiot boyfriend is played by Nick Braun, cousin Greg from Succession, and the very fine Colman Domingo as the pimp. The movie also stars TS Madison, Ari'el Stachel, and Jason Mitchell. Since it’s Twitter we’re talking about here, I’ll do it like this.

This is honestly the first trailer I’ve seen that has made me physically ache for a darkened, air-conditioned movie theater filled with rowdy women. I might risk it all for Zola. It's got more twists than Tenant, more thrills than Mission Impossible and definitely more hoeism than Space Jam 2 now that they've stripped Lola Bunny of her ability to earn a buck on the pole.
