Two injured as youths clash with customs officers in Adamawa

Published on March 23, 2025 at 04:43 PM

A confrontation between youths and operatives of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) in Fufore Local Government Area of Adamawa State has left two individuals injured after security officers opened fire to disperse a mob.

Counter-insurgency expert Zagazola Makama revealed on his X platform that the clash occurred around 4:00 a.m. on Friday at Kilange Village when a customs patrol team, returning from an operation, was confronted by a group of youths attempting to free a seized vehicle.

Earlier, the NCS team had intercepted a vehicle suspected of smuggling fuel to Cameroon at Wuro Manu Malabu. However, as they transported the confiscated vehicle, the youths barricaded the road, leading to a tense standoff.

In an attempt to control the situation, customs officers fired warning shots, but stray bullets struck two individuals—Abdulkarim Maikanti, 30, and Yauba Babai, 25—both reportedly residents of Cameroon. The injured were immediately rushed to Modibbo Adama University Teaching Hospital, Yola, for treatment.

Authorities have since visited the scene, and efforts are ongoing to convene a stakeholders' meeting to caution local youths against obstructing law enforcement operations.
