UCL: Why Declan Rice clashed with Partey as Arsenal beat Real Madrid 2-1

Published on April 17, 2025 at 07:53 AM

Arsenal midfielder, Declan Rice, was left fuming with team-mate Thomas Partey in the closing stages of their 2-1 win at Real Madrid on Wednesday night.

Partey picked up a late yellow card for dissent at the Bernabeu after clashing with Madrid's Dani Ceballos.

The Ghanaian midfielder berated the referee after Madrid centre back Antonio Rudiger caught the back of Mikel Merino in an aerial challenge.

Partey was subsequently booked for dissent, which led to Rice grabbing him by the arm, gritting his teeth and pushing him in the back as he expressed his frustration.

The booking rules him out of the first leg of their Champions League semi-final against Paris Saint-Germain.

Mikel Arteta will be hoping to have Jorginho back fit for the PSG game, after the Italian suffered a chest injury against Brentford last weekend.

Arsenal cruised to a 5-1 aggregate win against Los Blancos, having won the first leg 3-0 at the Emirates last week.
