The United Nations, on Tuesday, urged a humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza.
This is also as US Vice President, Joe Biden warned Israel that it was losing international support due to its “indiscriminate”; killing of people in its fight against Hamas militants.
After UN officials issued dire warnings about a worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza, the 193-member UN General Assembly backed a resolution calling for a ceasefire, with 153 countries voting in support and 23 abstaining.
The United States and Israel, which claim that a ceasefire only benefits Hamas, joined eight other countries in voting against the motion.
The resolution is not legally enforceable, but it bears political weight since it reflects a global perspective on the war.
Last week, the United States blocked a similar request in the Security Council’s 15-member body.
The Palestinian Authority applauded the resolution and encouraged other countries to put pressure on Israel to implement the ceasefire.
In a Telegram statement, Hamas official in exile Izzat El-Reshiq reiterated that stance, saying Israel should “stop its aggression, genocide, and ethnic cleansing against our people.”;
Before the resolution’s passage, Biden stated that Israel now has the support of “the majority of the world,”; including the United States and the European Union.
