US adds beer, can imports to 25% aluminum tariffs

Published on April 02, 2025 at 07:17 PM

The administration of US President Donald Trump on Wednesday announced that it was imposing a 25 per cent tariff on all beer imports.

The administration added the beverage and empty aluminium cans to a list of derivative products subject to its tariffs on aluminium.

In a Federal Register notice, the Commerce Department stated that duties on beer and empty aluminium cans would be collected starting at 12:01 a.m. EDT on Friday, 4 April.

The notice revising Trump's previous aluminium tariff changes lists only the tariff code for beer made from malt.

At the time of filing this report, the Commerce Department had not yet commented on the notice.

The disclosure comes just hours before Trump is expected to announce sweeping reciprocal tariffs on US trading partners, escalating a global trade war and fuelling expected price increases.

According to US Census Bureau data, the move would deal a substantial blow to beer imports, which exceeded $7.5 billion in 2024.

DAILY POST reports that Mexico dominates US beer imports, accounting for $6.3 billion last year, followed by the Netherlands at $683 million, Ireland at $192 million, and Canada at $73 million.
