Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has criticised the United States' proposal for a ceasefire in Ukraine in his condemnation of the latest Russian attack.
“What is there in this deal that can realistically stop a third Russian invasion? Nothing,” Johnson wrote on X on Thursday.
The latest missile attack killed at least 12 civilians and injured 90 in Kyiv, forcing President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to cut short a trip to South Africa.
Johnson, in his reaction, called for adequate security guarantees for Ukraine and encouraged allies to increase the pressure on President Vladimir Putin and Russia.
The former Conservative Party leader said Putin “indiscriminately butchers more Ukrainian civilians,” yet is being rewarded under the latest peace proposal by America.
Putin is being offered the right to keep sovereign Ukrainian territory he has taken by violence and in breach of international law, Johnson protested.
He said Russia is also getting “The right to control Ukraine’s destiny by forbidding NATO membership; An economic partnership with America; The lifting of sanctions against Russia; The chance to rebuild his (Putin's) armed forces for the next attack in a few short years’ time.”
Johnson, however, questioned what Ukraine would receive after three years of “appalling sacrifices” and heroic resistance against a brutal and unprovoked invasion.
The British politician said that apart from the right to share its natural resources with the United States, Ukraine would get nothing in the current proposal.
To prevent “more atrocities by Putin,” Johnson urged the US, the UK, and all Western allies to provide a long-term, credible and properly funded security guarantee for Ukraine.
