US: Trump’s tariffs suicide mission for Nigeria – Shehu Sani claims

Published on April 09, 2025 at 04:24 PM

Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, has described the tariffs by President Donald Trump of the United States, US, as a suicide mission for Nigeria's economy.

Sani said most Nigerians below 40 years have more Chinese products than that of the US in their homes.

Posting on X, he wrote: “Many families can point to ten Chinese products in their homes before pointing to One American product which is either Hollywood movies or Pfizer products.

“Many people younger than 40years have never even seen Carrier Air conditioners. Trump tariffs is a suicide mission for his country’s economy.”

Recently, Trump had reeled out several tariffs on foreign products.

The move had sparked a tariff war between Trump and China that vowed never to bow to the US.

The Chinese government had reiterated threats of further countermeasures and saying it was unwilling to fight a trade war but “will never sit idly by and watch the legitimate rights and interests of the Chinese people be damaged and deprived”;.

However, the Nigerian government had highlighted the impact of Trump's move on Nigeria's economy.

The Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Jumoke Oduwole said the tariffs could weaken the competitiveness of Nigerian products in the US market.
