War: Hungary announces withdrawal from ICC, gives reason

Published on April 03, 2025 at 09:28 AM

Hungary's government said on Thursday that it has decided to withdraw from the International Criminal Court, ICC.

According to Reuters, the decision came shortly after Israeli leader Benjamin Netanyahu, who is sought under an ICC arrest warrant, arrived in the country for a state visit.

Right-wing Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán had invited his Israeli counterpart to Budapest in November, a day after the ICC issued its arrest warrant.

The warrant was issued over allegations of war crimes in Gaza, where Israel was accused of launching its offensive following an attack by Hamas-led fighters on southern Israel.

Israel has rejected the accusations, stating that they are politically motivated and fueled by antisemitism.

According to the country, the ICC has lost all legitimacy by issuing warrants against a democratically elected leader of a nation exercising its right to self-defense.
