The Church of the Brethren in Nigeria, otherwise known as Ekklesiyar ‘Yan'Uwa A Nigeria, EYN, has rejected what it described as the narrowing of the polity to a one-party system.
The Church declared at its annual general meeting in Adamawa State that attacks on perceived political enemies by the powers that be must stop.
President of the EYN, Rev Daniel Mbaya, delivering his address at the ongoing 78th General Church Council meeting at the EYN headquarters complex in Kwarhi, Adamawa State, stressed that political freedom must be allowed to flourish around the country.
“We reject one party system and attacks on perceived political enemies should stop,” the EYN spiritual head charged.
He also made a case for the media, saying, “The press should enjoy their freedom and be protected.”
Mbaya asked President Bola Tinubu to make policies for the good of the masses and to avoid executive recklessness.
He enjoined members of the National Assembly to protect the country's democracy, emphasizing that making democracy work is a collective responsibility.
General Secretary of the EYN, Rev James Musa, explained to newsmen that the General Church Council or Majalisa is an annual meeting point of pastors and other leaders of the church to evaluate its progress and challenges and chart the way forward.
The ongoing Majalisa which entered its third day on Thursday, ends tomorrow, Friday April 11.
The EYN is a 102-year old Nigerian indigenous offshoot of the Church of the Brethren which has its roots in the United States.
The EYN which has hundreds of branches mostly in Adamawa State and other parts of the North-East, is described as the largest national body of the global Church of the Brethren.
