Wrexham to play Championship after third straight promotion

Published on April 26, 2025 at 08:07 PM

Wrexham hammered Charlton Athletic 3-0 to seal a historic promotion to the EFL Championship on Saturday.

Ollie Rathbone and Sam Smith scored within three first-half minutes to set the Welsh side on their way.

Smith, who arrived at the club in a record £2 million transfer, added a third in the 81st minute.

The victory secured second place for Wrexham in League One and the final automatic promotion spot behind runaway champions Birmingham City.

Wrexham's promotion sees them return to English football's second tier for the first time since they were relegated from the division at the end of the 1981-82 season.

Charlton had gone into the match as one of only two teams, alongside Wycombe Wanderers, who could deny Wrexham the second spot in the division.

However, with Wycombe losing 1-0 away to Leyton Orient earlier in the day, Wrexham knew that a win in their final home game of the season would clinch a record third successive promotion.

No team in English football history, dating back to the first competitive season in 1888, had ever achieved three consecutive promotions across the top five divisions.
