India has offered to assist earthquake victims in Myanmar and Thailand following a 7.7 magnitude earthquake that struck the region on Friday.

“India stands ready to offer all possible assistance,”; Prime Minister Modi wrote on X, adding that “our authorities are on standby”.

The United States Geological Survey, USGS, reported the earthquake’s magnitude as 7.7, though other services provided varying readings.

USGS stated the epicenter was located about 16 kilometers from Sagaing in north-western Myanmar.

The earthquake was felt in parts of Bangladesh and India, with tremors reaching the Indian state of Manipur, which borders Myanmar.

Local media reported panic in the western district of the regional capital, Imphal, though no significant damage was initially reported.

Tremors were also felt in Kolkata and the Bangladeshi capital, Dhaka.
