The Jigawa State Executive Council has approved the disbursement of N813 million to support the victims of the Majiya tanker explosion, which occurred in October 2024.

The state Commissioner for Information, Youth, Sports, and Culture, Hon. Sagir Musa, disclosed this while briefing journalists on the outcome of the council’s recent meeting.

He stated that the Majiya Committee has been directed to commence the distribution immediately, ensuring that compensation reaches the families of 201 deceased victims and over 70 survivors who sustained injuries in the tragic accident.

According to Hon. Musa, N850 million has been redeemed from the over N1.6 billion pledged by individuals, groups, and public organizations to assist the victims. The committee, chaired by retired Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Hafiz M. Inuwa, has been urged to intensify efforts to recover the remaining pledges.

The explosion, which occurred on October 15, 2024, in Majiya Town, Jigawa State, was one of the deadliest incidents in the state’s history.

The committee’s investigation revealed that 308 people were affected, with 209 confirmed dead and 99 others sustaining varying degrees of injuries.
