John Askey incredibly reveals York City sacked him by making him go to the printer to collect his own P45

YORK CITY have incredibly sacked their manager by making him go to the printer to collect his P45.

John Askey, 58, was appointed the non-league side’s head coach in November last year.

Askey was hurt by the way York City decided to sack him

And he led the club to promotion from the National League North through the play-offs.

But a poor run of form at the start of this season has seen him dismissed – with York City failing to win any of their last six games.

And the undignified way in which he claims he was sacked has left him bitterly disappointed.

Speaking to BBC Radio York, he said: “To have to stand in front of a printer and wait for a letter to be printed off and then be given it to see that I had been sacked… that hurt me more than anything.

“They talked about me coming in to talk to them and said it was about my contract.

“I said if it was about my contract I would need legal help and they said just to come in and pick the letter up.

“I think I deserve better than that. I think anybody does.”

York currently sit 12th in the National League, six points off the play-offs and eight above the relegation zone.

The club released a statement claiming Askey had asked to leave at the beginning of November.

However, the former manager has denied that was the case.

“The reason I said what I said was after the chairman’s interview,” he added. “I felt undermined and that there was no encouragement.

“I said that I couldn’t work with an owner or chairman who is doing this all the time. That’s what I said, I didn’t say I wanted to leave.

“It started in pre-season with the chairman going to the players and asking if they were happy with the style of play.

“He said when we won promotion that he didn’t think we were playing good football. It’s not what you want to hear as a manager.”
