John Lewis making major change to all 36 UK stores four-month trial – but it’ll cost shoppers at least £11

JOHN Lewis is making a major change to all 36 of its stores as part of a four month trial.

In partnership with the Timpson Group, is expanding its repair and alteration services across all stores.

Customers can bring , accessories and various items to be altered, cleaned or mended.

The expansion to began on April 9, so if your suede jacket or Persian rug needs a new lease of life, now is the time.

loyalty members can also claim 5 per cent off all single repair services as an ongoing offer.

What's included in the service?

  • Fashion and homeware repairs and alterations
  • Dry cleaning
  • Handbag restoration
  • Homeware items include: Duvets, bedding, curtains, and rug cleaning

It comes after a successful trial with -owned Johnsons across five of its branches in July 2024.

, , Cheadle, and Welwyn were the chosen locations.

The incentive was to encourage shoppers to have their items altered, repaired, cleaned or restored for a small fee, instead of chucking them out and buying replacements.

Extending a garment's life by nine months can reduce its carbon, waste and water footprint by up to 30 per cent, according to data by Wrap.

The also found that over four in five clothing repairs “displace” new purchases.

John Lewis said the most popular services from its previous trial were minor rip repairs, seam repairs, and trouser alterations.

Prices for minor rip repairs previously started at around £10.95.

Director of services and hospitality Katie Papakonstantinou said: “John Lewis has always been committed to providing a brilliant experience forcustomers, and repair adds another dimension to that.

“The great thing about repair is it works for the old and the new. Whether you need something tailored to fit you better or want to give your mum’s old handbag a new life, we’ve made it easy to restore treasured products.”;

Marija Rompani, Director of Ethics & , John Lewis Partnership, adds: “We’re still learning about which circular economy models work so it's great when a trial delivers positive results and shows us how we can make it effective at scale.

“Repair is a crucial part of the circular economy and mirrors our commitment to designing items with quality and longevity in mind, as part of our circular strategy.”;

It is important to note, the service does not include John Lewis Swindon and Canary Wharf.
