Kano govt halts illegal airstrip construction blocking farmlands in Bebeji

Published on March 29, 2025 at 09:18 AM

The Kano State Government has stopped the illegal construction of a private airstrip in Bebeji Local Government Area, stating that the project had blocked access to farmlands and nearby villages.

The Secretary of the task force on Development Control in the Kano State Ministry of Land, Hamid Sidi Ali, disclosed this during a visit to the construction site, following complaints from residents of Arewawa and Allon Sarki communities.

“We received reports from members of the communities around this area that construction work had suddenly begun without prior notice. Upon investigation, we discovered that the project had completely blocked farmers from accessing their lands, causing hardship for them,”; Ali said.

He further stated that the ministry had taken immediate steps to halt the project and restore access to the affected farmlands.

“This is why we have come to verify and investigate the situation, and to ensure that this issue is brought to an end. We have placed notice boards at the site to stop all ongoing activities and to provide access for villagers and landowners to continue their farming activities,”; he added.

Ali also revealed that the identity of the person behind the construction remains unknown, as there was no record of approval for such a project.

“We hereby invite the said owner of the land to come forward for investigation. From our records, there is no approval from the ministry for any airstrip construction. We need him to come forward for further clarification,”; he stated.
