The Kano State Government has suspended the sanitation exercise, which is supposed to be conducted on Saturday, 26 April.
A statement by the Director of Public Enlightenment of the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, Ismail Gwammaja, said the suspension was in a bid to ensure the smooth conduct of the ongoing Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, UTME.
According to the statement, the decision was taken after careful consideration and consultation with relevant stakeholders to allow students of Kano State to sit for their UTME without any hitches.
The Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Dr Dahiru Hashim, assured residents that the suspension is temporary, for only this month, and that the sanitation exercise will resume next month, May 2025, in the state.
He appealed to residents to cooperate with the authorities and understand the rationale behind this decision.
“We are committed to maintaining a clean and healthy environment, and we will work tirelessly to ensure that our sanitation activities do not conflict with other important events in the state,”; he said in the statement.
While commending the residents for their understanding and cooperation with the present administration, the commissioner urged them to avoid indiscriminate dumping of waste and cooperate with sanitation staff to ensure a clean and healthy environment.
