Published on April 02, 2025 at 06:49 AM

Alhaji Abbas Sanusi, the longest-serving member of the Kano Emirate Council and its most senior councillor, has passed away at the age of 92.
The revered traditional leader, who held the prestigious title of Galadiman Kano, died on April 1, 2025, in Kano after a prolonged illness.

A prominent figure in the emirate for decades, Abbas Sanusi began his leadership journey in 1959 when his father, Emir Sanusi I, appointed him as Sarkin Dawakin Tsakar Gida and district head of Ungogo. He later rose to Dan Iyan Kano in 1962 under Emir Muhammadu Inuwa, and during Emir Ado Bayero’s reign, he was elevated to Wambai of Kano. His highest honor came during the tenure of his nephew, Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II, who named him Galadiman Kano, the most senior position in the emirate council.

Born in 1933 in Bichi, Abbas Sanusi pursued his early education at Kofar Kudu Elementary School in 1944, later attending Kano Middle School (now Rumfa College) in 1948.

He is survived by his children, including Abdullahi Abbas, the current chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State.

His funeral prayer is set to take place at Emir’s Palace, Kofar Kudu, Kano, at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, April 2, 2025.
