Kano rolls out new laws to fight environmental pollution

The Kano State Government has unveiled a set of new environmental protection laws aimed at addressing the escalating pollution concerns.

Dr. Dahir Hashim, the Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, revealed this shortly after presenting the new regulations to the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Umar Farouk-Ibrahim, who expressed full commitment to supporting the initiative.

“These new regulations are focused on combating environmental pollution, particularly issues such as the discharge of harmful chemicals, improper waste disposal, open defecation on streets, and the contamination of water bodies by factories,”; Hashim explained.

In related developments, the commissioner shared that an eight-week public awareness campaign will be launched by the ministry to educate the public on the importance of maintaining a clean environment.

“This campaign will focus on individuals and sectors that are directly impacted by these new laws to ensure they understand the need for environmental responsibility and cleanliness,”; Hashim added.

He Sa'id to further ensure clarity and accessibility, the laws will be made available in both Hausa and English languages within the week.

Hashim expressed confidence that the people of Kano would fully embrace the government's efforts to foster a cleaner and healthier environment.
