Gunmen abducted a 400-level student of the Federal University Birnin Kebbi (FUBK), Augustine Madubiya, in an early morning attack on Tuesday that also left a local resident dead.

DAILY POST gathered that the incident occurred around 3:00 a.m. at Istijaba Villa, an off-campus student hostel in the Unguwar Jeji area.

According to eyewitnesses, five armed men confronted students who were sleeping outdoors due to the heat, demanding money. When the students said they had none, the attackers resorted to violence.

During the chaos, a resident, Malam Siddi Hussaini, who was attending to his cattle nearby, attempted to intervene but was shot and killed by the gunmen.

The assailants then abducted Augustine Madubiya, a final-year Economics student. However, another student, Collaneous Steven, a 200-level Business Administration student, managed to escape the attack.

Following the incident, the Vice Chancellor of FUBK, Professor Muhammad Zaiyan Umar, visited the scene in the company of the Divisional Police Officer of Kalgo Division and officials from the Department of State Services (DSS).

He addressed students and assured them of the university’s ongoing commitment to their safety.

Umar also informed the Kebbi State Governor, Nasir Idris, of the incident, through the Secretary to the State Government and the Director of Security Services at the Cabinet Office.

The university expressed its appreciation to the District Head of Unguwar Jeji and members of the local community for their support.

It further appealed for continued cooperation from the state government, the Nigeria Police, and other security agencies to ensure the safe return of the abducted student and to prevent future incidents.
