Kogi SDP slams ban on rallies, tags it an attack on democracy

Published on April 02, 2025 at 03:15 PM

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Kogi has strongly condemned the recent ban on political rallies and convoys imposed by the state government.
The condemnation was issued by the State Chairman of SDP, Mr. Ahmed Attah, in a statement signed by the party's Press Secretary, Isaiah Ijele, on Tuesday.

In the statement, Attah described the ban as an attack on democratic principles, asserting that it was a clear attempt to silence opposition voices.

He further urged Governor Ahmed Ododo to learn from the past and avoid repeating harmful practices that have previously hindered the state's progress.

“The party views this action as an attempt to suppress the freedom of association and movement enshrined in the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,”;; Attah stated.

He emphasized that Kogi was not at war and called on the government to focus on development rather than engaging in political manoeuvres.

Attah also warned against returning to the “dark days of repression”;; and expressed particular concern over the impact on opposition parties.

He then urges the government to reconsider its stance and prioritize the advancement of the state over political suppression.
