LAWMA official dies as minibus collides with compactor truck in Lagos

Published on April 01, 2025 at 10:30 AM

An official of the Lagos Waste Management Authority, LAWMA, has lost his life after being struck by a commercial minibus, locally known as a “Korope,” at Ketu Bus Stop late Monday night.

According to reports, the minibus crashed into a stationary LAWMA compactor truck, resulting in the fatal accident.

Confirming the incident, the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, attributed the crash to reckless driving by the minibus driver and improper parking of the LAWMA truck.

“Preliminary investigations indicate that the accident was caused by reckless driving on the part of the minibus driver, as well as the failure to place a proper ‘C-Caution' sign at an appropriate distance from the parked LAWMA truck,” Oke-Osanyintolu explained.

Tragically, a LAWMA official working at the scene was struck in the process and succumbed to his injuries before emergency responders arrived. Meanwhile, the minibus driver sustained severe injuries and received immediate medical attention from paramedics at the scene.

The remains of the deceased have been handed over to officials of the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU) for further procedures.
