The Jigawa State Government has called on individuals, groups and organizations that pledged financial support to victims of the Majia tanker explosion to fulfill their commitments.

The Commissioner for Information, Youth, Sports, and Culture, Sagir Musa, made this appeal while briefing journalists on the outcome of the State Executive Council meeting, presided over by Governor Umar Namadi.

He revealed that six months after the petrol tanker explosion in Majia town, Taura Local Government Area, on October 14 last year, some donors had yet to redeem their pledges.

According to the report submitted by the government committee investigating the incident, 209 people lost their lives, while 99 others sustained injuries.

Musa stated that the government had approved the disbursement of N839,686,580 from the funds already redeemed while awaiting the fulfillment of the remaining pledges.

He noted that over N1.6 billion was pledged, but only N839 million had been received so far. The redeemed funds, contributed by individuals, groups, corporate organizations and institutions, will be distributed among the 210 victims, including the injured and families of the deceased.

The Majia Incident Committee, led by the Secretary to the State Government, Malam Bala Ibrahim, has been tasked with ensuring full disbursement of the funds and following up on outstanding pledges.
