Man commits suicide after wife’s death in Niger

Published on April 25, 2025 at 05:37 PM

A 30-year-old man identified as Stephen has reportedly taken his own life in Ikumi Shako Ward, Gurara Local Government Area of Niger State, barely a month after the death of his wife.

Sources say Stephen’s second wife passed away in March 2025, leaving him devastated.

Since then, those close to him observed signs of severe emotional distress, with Stephen often lamenting that he couldn't cope without her.

Witnesses revealed that on Thursday morning, Stephen was seen carrying a hunting rifle, though neighbors did not initially perceive it as a threat.

Hours later, his lifeless body was discovered in a secluded part of the community, with a gunshot wound to the head and the firearm beside him.

Despite the tragedy, Stephen’s first wife is still alive. He also leaves behind two children.

Comrade Adamu Haruna, Coordinator of the Nigeria Youth Council in Gurara LGA, confirmed the incident. He called for greater awareness and support for mental health challenges, especially in times of bereavement.
