Published on March 22, 2025 at 07:50 PM

A meningitis outbreak at Kebbi State University of Science and Technology, Aliero (KSUSTA), has resulted in the deaths of six students, prompting swift intervention by university and health authorities.

According to a statement by the university’s Public Relations Officer, Mustapha Ango, the administration, led by Vice-Chancellor B.G. Danshehu, is deeply saddened by the loss and has taken urgent steps to contain the outbreak.

A specialized committee, led by the Provost of the College of Health Sciences, Prof. Balarabe Adamu Isah, has been set up to investigate and manage the situation. The university immediately reported the outbreak to the Kebbi State Ministry of Health and the Ministry for Higher Education. A high-level stakeholders’ meeting was also convened, bringing together experts from the World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, Médecins Sans Frontières, and other medical professionals.

Despite these efforts, the disease claimed six lives. The university has urged students to remain vigilant and seek medical attention for any symptoms.

Ango assured the university community that all necessary measures are being taken to prevent further casualties, while extending condolences to the affected families. Students and staff are encouraged to stay informed through the university’s Public Relations Office.
