Here are two polar opposite Lohan family member stories. On the one hand, we’ve got Michael Lohan, getting arrested again. This time for allegedly running a rehab patient brokering scam in, where else, Florida. And on the polar opposite end of the spectrum, there’s his daughter Lindsay Lohan, breaking with family tradition by revealing that she has good news worth sharing: she got a job! And unlike her dad, her job is legit and not illegal.
Lindsay posted a selfie to Instagram yesterday, with the caption, “Into the groove” and a little movie camera emoji, which looks a whole lot like she’s telling us that she’s working on something, acting-wise. She didn’t get into specifics about what she’s working on. Please oh please oh please let it be a self-directed music video for her sure-to-be-a-hit single “Lullabye.” She could also be filming the thriller she was cast in last year, Cursed. Or maybe she’s finally going to show up for that guest spot on Ramy? Only time will tell.
One can also assume this gig comes with a check, since we know she doesn’t get out of bed for any less than $355. But whatever money she’s making, she better hold on tight to it, because her daddy is probably about to place a collect call, begging for bail money. NBC News reports that Lindsay’s 60-year-old father was arrested today in Palm Beach County, Florida after he got busted for allegedly working a shady patients-for-paychecks racket. State Attorney Dave Aronberg has been cracking down on Florida’s treatment industry, and more than 100 people have been caught running scams in rehab centers.
Michael Lohan faces five counts of patient brokering, and one count of attempted patient brokering. To break it down, what Michael Lohan was allegedly doing was bringing would-be patients to a rehab center, and once they checked in, the rehab center would allegedly cut him a check. He was like an addiction recruiter. According to CBS 12, checks worth over $25,000 were allegedly written to Michael Lohan:
An arrest affidavit states that Lohan is the president of Lola Recovery Ventures in Palm Beach Gardens. Several checks were made out to Lohan, Lola Recovery, or Lola Recovery Ventures totaling $27,750.
Attorney Dave Aronberg released this statement regarding Michael Lohan’s arrest:
“Mr. Lohan was investigated by our Sober Homes Task Force and he’s being charged with receiving kickbacks for referring patients to drug treatment. Patient brokering corrupts our health care system because decisions are motivated by greed instead of a patient’s needs. This is our Task Force’s 117th arrest and will not be our last.”
Michael has been positioning himself as somewhat of a Christian addiction specialist recently, as you can see from this massive red flag of an Instagram post:
This all feels very weird, almost as if the situation was created using Messy Madlibs. But South Florida is called the recovery capital of the world, due to the number of treatment centers there, and a large number of patients seeking treatment. This is a common scam, called “body brokering,” where sneaky types will look for addicts with good health insurance, that they can bill for any number of reasons, legit or not. And allegedly that’s what Michael was doing, in connection with rehab centers who allegedly paid for those patients he found. So using your name and fame to push people into a rehab center that just so happens to also be slipping money into your pockets is unethical at best, and illegal at worst. A nervous, sweaty Dr. Phil just unbuttoned his collar and asked, “Wait, sleazeballs can get got for that? Well shucks, did it suddenly just get really hot in here??”
