Fenerbahce's Jose Mourinho is believed to be “close” to replacing Roberto Martinez as Portugal manager, according to CNN.
It is a shock move that could see Mourinho reunited with Cristiano Ronaldo.
The two Portuguese men worked together at Real Madrid between 2010 and 2013.
Mourinho is being lined up by the Portuguese federation, and is likely land the job this summer.
Coaching Ronaldo is not believed to be an issue for Mourinho, despite the tension between the two from their time together in Spain.
Taking over now would allow Mourinho a long time with the national team ahead of the 2026 World Cup in North America.
Portugal's progression to the Nations League semi-finals in June is said not to have disrupted the talks with Mourinho.
Martinez is set to take charge of that match – plus either the third-place play-off or final that follows – but the decision has supposedly been made to make the change afterwards.
