National Assembly extends recess by one week

Published on April 21, 2025 at 12:18 PM

Clerk of the National Assembly, Kamoru Ogunlana, says both chambers of the legislature have extended their resumption date by one week.

Recall that senators and members of the House of Representatives began their latest recess on March 27 and were billed to return to legislative business on April 29.

Ogunlana, in a statement on Monday, said plenary in both chambers will now resume on May 6.

According to the clerk, the earlier resumption date has been shelved to allow lawmakers participate in the Workers’ Day ceremony and attend to constituency matters.

“I am directed to inform distinguished senators, honourable members, and the general public that the two houses of the national assembly have extended the date for the resumption of plenary sessions from Tuesday, 29th April 2025, to Tuesday, 6th May 2025.

“This extension allows distinguished senators and honourable members to participate in the Workers’ Day ceremony and attend to other engagements in their constituencies.

“Distinguished senators, honourable members, and the general public are invited to take note of the new resumption date,” the statement read.

Leader of the senate, Opeyemi Bamidele, in his Easter message on Sunday, said the national assembly is developing legal frameworks to establish state police as part of efforts to address insecurity in the country.

“While the Authority of the National Assembly is in the process of developing legal frameworks for the establishment of state police as one of the measures to address insecurity in the country, we urge security agencies to work together as a team to track and apprehend all the masterminds and sponsors of terror attacks nationwide,”; he said.
