NICK POPE was the penalty hero as he saved three spot kicks to edge Newcastle past Crystal Palace in the Carabao Cup.
A poor-quality goalless 90 minutes was followed by an even worse shootout as five of the ten takers failed to convert from the spot.
Malcolm Ebiowei missed the final kick as Palace went out aftert Bruno Guimaraes hit his pen over the bar only moments earlier.
Both teams made sweeping changes to their team from the weekend and it led to a scrappy game where both teams spurned half-chances.
