The Niger State House of Assembly has constituted a seven-member ad hoc committee to investigate alleged negligence at the Jummai Babangida Aliyu Neonatal and Maternal Hospital, Minna.
The committee was established following a motion of urgent public importance sponsored by Hon. Mohammed Abubakar, representing Chanchaga Constituency, on the floor of the House.
Hon. Abubakar, while presenting the motion, highlighted the alleged negligence that led to the death of a patient, Mrs Umar, wife of Umar B. Shehu, during fibroid surgery due to a power outage and a faulty generator.
The lawmaker accused the hospital’s management of failing to ensure alternative power sources, resulting in a delay in the surgery and, ultimately, the patient’s death.
The ad hoc committee will investigate the alleged negligence and other complaints regarding the hospital’s services, with a focus on prioritising patient safety and well-being.
Similarly, the Assembly has unanimously passed a bill establishing the Water User Association.
After deliberations on the matter, the Deputy Speaker, Hon. Afiniki Eunice Dauda, directed the clerk of the House to transmit five clean copies to the Executive for assent.
