Nigerian Immigration Service begins contactless international passport renewal in US, three other countries

Published on April 14, 2025 at 05:20 AM

The Nigerian Immigration Service has commenced the contactless Biometric International Passport Application System in the United States of America, Mexico, Jamaica, and Brazil.

The spokesperson of NIS, AS Akinlabi, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday.

NIS said the development is a continuation of the phased rollout of the Contactless Biometric Passport Application System across Nigerian missions abroad to allow Nigerians to renew their passports without visiting passport centres for biometric enrolments.

The NIS said the initiative has already kicked off in the US on April 11, 2025, while Mexico, Jamaica, and Brazil take off on Monday, April 14.

“The application system, which is currently available on the Google Play Store (NIS Mobile), is designed to allow Nigerians to renew their passports without visiting any passport centre for biometrics enrolment.

“The Apple Store version will be onboarded shortly, and an enhanced version of the NIS Mobile Apps for both Android and iOS users will be deployed to further improve users' experience and accessibility,” the statement partly reads.
The Nigerian Immigration Service further noted that with this latest rollout, Nigerians in the diaspora can now access the Contactless Biometric Passport Application System in Canada, Europe, Asia, the US, Mexico, Jamaica, and Brazil.

NIS added that the contactless Biometric Passport Application System service will be unveiled in Australia and Nigeria at a future date.

“It is yet to be rolled out in Australia and Nigeria; a future date will be announced for both countries in due course,” it stated.
