Nigerian Newspapers: 10 things you need to know Saturday morning

Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Nigerian Newspapers:

1. The Edo State Police Command last night confirmed the arrest of 14 suspects in connection with the Thursday attack on a travelling party of hunters at Udune Efandion, an Uromi community, in the Esan North Local Government of the state. Sixteen of the hunters said to be from the North on a hunting expedition to Rivers State were allegedly killed.

2. The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has confirmed the death of one of its officers and the arrest of 19 Shi’ite members during a clash in Abuja. The Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, CP Ajao Adewale, has also condemned the attack on security operatives by members of the proscribed Islamic Movement of Nigeria, also known as the Shi’ites.

3. Ten days after Rivers State Governor, Dr. Siminalayi Fubara was suspended and a state of emergency was declared, Ijaw leaders in the Niger Delta assessed the situation over the weekend and concluded that President Bola Tinubu had been misled.

4. The Senator representing Kogi Central, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, has petitioned the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and the Kogi State Commissioner of Police, Miller Dantawaye, over alleged forgery of signatures. It was gathered that the petitions were submitted to the IGP and the police commissioner on Friday afternoon.

5. The South-West zone of the National Association of University Students has called on the Federal Government to reverse the hike in telecommunication tariffs. The university student body said the country would witness the mobilisation of students against the hike if the government and other stakeholders failed to address the issue.

6. The Benue State House of Assembly has passed a resolution to approach the Supreme Court for the interpretation of Section 292 (1) A (11) as it pertains to the removal of a Chief Judge. The House, which was presided by the Speaker, Hyacinth Dajoh, agreed to approach the apex court immediately for proper interpretation of the section of the constitution empowering it to recommend the removal of the Chief Judge.

7. The Ogun State Police Command said on Friday that it has within the first three months of the year arrested 2,141 suspects for various criminal offences ranging from armed robbery to rape and cultism, among others. The command said that within this same period, it has prosecuted 1530 suspects, secured 62 convictions, and recovered properties, including stolen vehicles, with a value of N106,786,000.

8. The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Mr Nyesom Wike, has refuted the claim by the Peoples Democratic Party that its land title was revoked as a ploy to suppress opposition. Wike, who is also a life bencher, expressed dismay over PDP’s allegation that he had been instructed to revoke the party’s land title in Central Area, Abuja, to stifle opposition.

9. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has stated that its investigation into Ms. Aisha Achimugu is not politically motivated and has no connection to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar or Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. EFCC Spokesperson Dele Oyewale made this clarification in a statement on Friday in Abuja.

10. The Naira appreciated on Friday in the official market, trading at N1,536.82 to a dollar. Data from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) website showed that Naira gained N1.84. This represents a 0.11 per cent increase compared to the N1,538.66 per dollar recorded on Thursday.
