Nigerian Senate testing Open grazing law while others advance – Activist, Agberen

Published on March 27, 2025 at 07:53 PM

Right activist, Derrick Agberen has accused the Nigerian Senate of still testing the”Open Grazing Law” when other countries who are beneficiaries of the nation's natural resources, have advanced in protecting human rights and mastered animal welfare.

Agberen lamented that in the midst of government's misplaced priorities, Nigerian citizens remain impoverished, with none of these laws proving effective.

In a statement sent in Warri, “In recent times, the situation has escalated, resulting in clashes between herders and various communities in Southern, Eastern, and Western Nigeria, leading to numerous fatalities, pain, and suffering.”

Agberen noted that, “Since inception, the National Assembly of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has been a tactical arm employed by the Federal Government to distract Nigerians by moving from one bill to another for 8 years without successfully passing any of them into law as far as it concerns the well-being of the people.

“Most times, one would wonder if these characters we see on national television are stage-managed, considering the level of seriousness displayed while citizens continue to debate.

“Recently, the Nigerian Senate deliberated on legislation to prohibit phonographic sites in Nigeria amidst severe insecurity challenges and extreme poverty levels affecting the populace.”

He queried,”Who has programmed us in this manner has caused more harm than the actions of the national assembly representatives. Things we ought to take seriously as a people, we joke over them.

“Very soon, Burkina Faso will become another foreign destination for some of us, while Nigerian politicians will continue to toss us back and forth with no meaningful change if citizens continue in this direction.”
