Northern elders hail military crackdown on bandits after violence free Eid

Published on April 01, 2025 at 02:58 PM

The Northern Elders Political Development group has commended the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, and the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, for their efforts in enhancing security across the North West region.

In a statement released in Kaduna on Tuesday, the group’s Secretary, Dr. Adamu Giwa, noted that most towns and villages in the region celebrated Eid-el-Fitri peacefully, with only isolated cases of unrest reported in parts of Sokoto and Zamfara.

The commendation follows the success of Operation Fansa Yamma, which has dismantled several bandit enclaves, significantly improving travel and trade along key routes, including Sokoto-Gusau-Kano.

The group also acknowledged the military’s sacrifices, lauding Minister Matawalle’s unwavering support for troops, which has boosted their morale.

Furthermore, they praised General Musa’s leadership in coordinating military operations to maintain peace in the region.

The elders recognized President Bola Tinubu’s backing of security forces, which has contributed to a decline in kidnappings and attacks in Zamfara, Katsina, and Sokoto states.

However, they raised concerns over sporadic attacks in parts of Sokoto, Katsina, Kebbi, and Zamfara, urging continued vigilance.

Despite these concerns, the group expressed confidence in ongoing military efforts to sustain peace and stability in the region.
