Nottingham Forest missed a handful of chances in the second half

A goal in each half from Rico Lewis and Omar Marmoush was enough for City to face Crystal Palace in the final on May 17.

So Pep Guardiola's side are in prime position to take home a piece of silverware after a disappointing season by their standards.

With , a defeat would have really rubbed salt into City's wounds.

And birthday boy Anthony Elanga, introduced at half-time, threatened to after scuffing his shot wide from five yards almost immediately.

And Morgan Gibbs-White clattered both posts with curling shots in later in the second half.

Then it was Taiwo Awoniyi's turn to hit the woodwork.

The striker flashed a leg towards the ball and it turned it into a great finish that loops back off the post.

Gibbs-White then came flying in with a header that Ortega scrambles clear with a smart save.

City now have a chance to salvage their season against Palace, who beat Aston Villa 3-0 at Wembley on Saturday.

Guardiola's side lost the FA Cup final last season to Manchester United – a few days after lifting their seven Prem title.

They beat United the season before in their triple-winning campaign.
