The United States is set for the scheduled talks with Iran as the countries try to reach a deal on the Islamic Republic's nuclear programme.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed the much-awaited parley during a cabinet meeting on Thursday at the White House.
Sitting next to President Donald Trump, Rubio reiterated America's position, which is zero tolerance for Iran's nuclear advancements.
“An important meeting is going to happen on Saturday for the first time in a long time. We hope that will lead to peace.
“We've been very clear what Iran is never going to have is a nuclear weapon. That's what led to this meeting,” the top diplomat said.
Rubio noted that the “direct talks” will involve the Special Envoy for the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, and a top-level leader from Iran.
The meeting, expected to be held in Oman, comes amid a spat between the U.S. and Iran, with Tehran insisting on advancing its nuclear programme.
Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi already indicated his nation's readiness to engage with the U.S. “with a view to seal a deal.”
