One killed, many injured as explosions rock Lagos

Published on April 04, 2025 at 12:38 PM

A twin explosion believed to be caused by grenades, on Thursday, rocked a scavenging site on Taiwo Street in the Idi-Araba area of Mushin Local Government, Lagos State, resulting in the death of one person and injuries to at least eight others.

Eyewitnesses said the first explosion occurred around noon, claiming the life of a scavenger who was reportedly attempting to dismantle a suspicious metallic object resembling a rocket. The impact of the blast was severe, with sources confirming the victim died instantly.

“They probably picked up the object from somewhere else,”; said Jegede Taiwo, a local resident. “The force of the blast was so intense it decapitated the man.”;

Later in the evening, a second explosion occurred around 5:00 p.m., according to another resident, Shehu Idris. The second blast caused significant damage, razing a nearby residential building and injuring more people.

“We saw at least eight people injured, and they were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment,”; Mr. Idris reported.

Videos from the scene circulating on social media showed two suspicious items resembling rocket-propelled grenades at the location, further fueling concerns over how such dangerous materials ended up in the hands of scavengers.

Police operatives and firefighters were deployed to the scene to douse tension in the community.
