Data obtained via an FOI request to the Foreign Office shows that over 12,684 were reported lost or stolen in the last six months of 2024.

That’s according to new data seen by specialist travel insurance comparison sitePayingTooMuch.

The cost of a replacement standard adult passport is £94.50.

And the application fee for an emergency travel document (ETD) costs £100.

However, the actual cost to the individual is likely much higher, with additional fees for expedited processing, flight rebooking, and extended accommodation.

Losing a passport, particularly while on holiday, can have a huge financial impact, but there are ways to ease this burden.
