Plateau killings: Attackers aim is to impoverish us, take our land – Youth Council

The Plateau Youth Council (PYC) Northern Zone on Saturday said the recent attacks on some communities in the state are aimed at impoverishing the citizens and taking over their ancestral lands.

DAILY POST recalls that over 50 people were killed in Zikke and Kimakpa communities in Irigwe chiefdom, Bassa LGA of Plateau State.

Briefing journalists in Jos, PYC Zonal Coordinator, Comrade Samson Chiroma said, “Why is it that such attacks only happen when the rainy season is about to set in?

“Is it an attempt or grand plan to stop our people from accessing their farms thereby subjecting them to perpetual economic hardship?

“We have news for our attackers; they should know that no amount of attacks can stop us from cultivating our lands as that has always been the preoccupation of our people and we will continue to carry on with this vocation and practice. No level of intimidation can stop us.

“Let's remind the world that Plateau people are hospitable and peace-loving but our peaceful disposition should not be mistaken for weakness.

“And so we call on the federal government to intensify efforts to fish out those behind the current killings in parts of Northern Plateau with the view to prosecuting them so that it will serve as deterrent to those who may be contemplating on carrying out such barbaric acts.

“Similarly, there is urgent need for the Plateau State government to strengthen the local security architecture, Operation Rainbow with the requisite equipment to aid in their operations.

“More hands must be engaged to strengthen the security outfit to further compliment the conventional and non conventional security architecture in the state.”
