Police uncover illegal maternity home in Akwa Ibom, rescue pregnant woman, infants

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command said it has busted an illegal maternity home in Usung Atiat, Abak Local Government Area of the state.

The Public Relations Officer of the Command, DSP Timfon John, who disclosed this in a statement in Uyo on Friday, said the maternity home was allegedly involved in child trafficking, unlawful medical practice, and impersonation.

John explained that operatives, acting on intelligence, raided the premises and arrested one Patience Ene Jimmy, ‘f', who was found harboring seven pregnant women and five infants aged between two weeks and one year, all from different parts of Akwa Ibom State.

She said, *”A further search led to the recovery of various medical supplies, including syringes, drip lines, herbs, and immunization records, for which the suspect had no legal authorization.

“The rescued women and children have been placed under protective care, while investigations are ongoing to uncover other collaborators and ensure justice is served.”*

She added that “Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, fsi, has reiterated the Command’s commitment to dismantling illegal activities endangering vulnerable individuals.”

She further said the Commissioner has directed residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to the nearest police station or contact the Command’s emergency lines: 09040000065 or 08020913810.
