Premier League releases statement on two disallowed goals as Chelsea beat Tottenham

Published on April 04, 2025 at 05:19 AM

The Premier League has explained why two goals were cancelled as Chelsea edged Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 in a Premier League game on Thursday night.

In a statement, it was confirmed that Moises Caicedo's shot was chalked off after a VAR check because his team-mate Levi Colwill had strayed into an offside position.

Caicedo's effort came minutes after Enzo Fernandez had headed the Blues into a 1-0 lead.

“VAR checked the referee’s call of goal – and established that Colwill was in an offside position in the build-up and recommended that the goal was disallowed,” the Premier League wrote on its X account.

Pape Matar Sarr's long-range effort was also cancelled after another VAR check.

Referee Craig Pawson had given the goal in real time, but was then advised to review it on the VAR monitor.

In another post, the Premier League said: “VAR checked the referee’s call of goal for Tottenham – and deemed there was a foul by Sarr on Caicedo in the build-up and recommended an on-field review.

“The referee then overturned the original decision and the goal was disallowed, with Sarr then cautioned for a reckless challenge.”
