Putin declares ‘Easter Truce’, halts military operations in Ukraine

Published on April 19, 2025 at 02:32 PM

President Vladimir Putin has announced that Russia will cease “all military operations” as part of an “Easter truce” in Ukraine.

Putin said he assumes Ukraine will follow Russia's example.

In an update on the Kremlin's Telegram, Putin said the temporary ceasefire will last from 6:00 pm Saturday until Monday.

“Guided by humanitarian considerations, today from 18:00 to midnight from Sunday to Monday, the Russian side declares an Easter truce. I order all military actions to be stopped for this period.

“At the same time, our troops must be ready to repel possible violations of the truce and provocations from the enemy, any of its aggressive actions,” the update added.

Ukraine has not yet issued a response to the proposal by Russia.

The development comes after President Donald Trump's administration said it was ready to recognize Russian control of Crimea.

The decision comes as part of the US proposal to drive an end to the war between Russia and Ukraine.

DAILY POST reports that Crimea, southern Ukraine, has been under Russian occupation since it was illegally annexed in 2014.

Four other Ukrainian regions – Donetsk and Luhansk in the east and Kherson and Zaporizhzhia in the south – have also been partially occupied by Russia since its full-scale invasion in 2022.
