With bids flying in, the final price soared to an eye-watering sum, proving once again that rare coins can be worth way more than spare change.

One lucky seller struck gold after auctioning off the rare 1983 20p, mistakenly struck on a copper-coloured blank, making it a prized find.

The ultra-rare bronze 20p sparked a bidding frenzy, racking up 28 bids before selling for an impressive three-figure sum.

Experts are now urging Brits to rummage through their spare change – you could be sitting on a small fortune!

Meanwhile, the 50p coin has become Britain’s most sought-after collectible, with rare designs fetching serious cash.

With its unique seven-sided shape and 27.5mm diameter, it’s the biggest British coin – and often marks major historical events.

Selling strategy matters too – while some coins spark bidding wars on eBay, others fetch top prices through specialist dealers.

Coin collectors have been urged to check their wallets as one ultra-rare 50p coin is set to be sold for more than £4,000.

The item features famous fictional detective Sherlock Holmes on one side and Queen Elizabeth II on the other.

What are the most rare and valuable coins?

“A valuable addition to any coin collection, this 50p denomination coin showcases iconic British cultural heritage with its portrayal of Sherlock Holmes.”

This comes after a rare Blue Peter Olympic 50p was flogged on eBay for £205.

The coin shows an athlete doing the high jump and was drawn by nine-year-old Florence Jackson after winning a competition on the kid's TV show.
