Reps laud South-East govs for seeking political solution to Nnamdi Kanu’s detention

The House of Representatives has applauded South-East governors for prioritizing political solution to the detention of Nnamdi Kanu on the agenda for their upcoming meeting with President Bola Tinubu.

This was disclosed in a statement by the chairman of the Committee on Monitoring and Evaluation of House Standing and Adhoc Committees, Obi Aguocha.

Aguocha, who represents Ikwuano/Umuahia North/Umuahia South Federal Constituency of Abia State, noted that the inclusion of the matter in their agenda is a bold and necessary step that reflects both leadership and a shared commitment to lasting peace, justice and national healing.

“I commend our governors for recognising that the time is ripe for intentional and courageous steps by all critical stakeholders to re-engage, dialogue, and secure a political resolution to the matter of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

“This gesture signals a renewed hope for the entire South-East region and for Nigeria as a whole,” he said.

He recalled that Kanu was first arraigned at the age of 47 and is now 57 years old, yet still undergoing trial.

“This continued legal limbo does not serve the interests of justice, national cohesion or regional stability,”; Aguocha added.

The federal lawmaker reiterated his long-standing call for dialogue, reconciliation and the embrace of political means as a viable path forward. He urged all parties involved to demonstrate goodwill and act in the spirit of unity and resolution.

“The South-East is a vital part of our national fabric, and addressing this issue will not only calm frayed nerves but also reaffirm the government’s commitment to justice, equity, and fairness.

“Let us seize this moment to foster healing and re-commit ourselves to a better and more inclusive Nigeria,” the lawmaker noted.

Aguocha pledged his continued support for any lawful, peaceful and political means to bring an end to the prolonged detention of his constituent, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, stressing that “this moment calls for courage, wisdom, and decisive leadership”.
