Watch moment Holly Willoughby drops clue over Dancing on Ice's future after series 17 finale

RICHARD Osman has revealed why channels ‘rest' shows instead of axing them – and it means your favourite show could never return.

The TV presenter and author has a vast of industry experience, having co-created BBC hit Pointless.

Richard Osman has revealed why shows are ‘rested' rather than ‘axed' by channels
It comes after Dancing On Ice was officially rested by ITV after 19 years on air

Following the news that ITV were ‘resting' Dancing On Ice after 19 years on air, Richard has now revealed why they've not ‘axed' the format.

Taking to X, formerly Twitter, he said: “If you ‘cancel' it then within 12 months it can be sold to another channel, if you ‘rest' it then it can't!”

It means should a rival broadcaster want to reboot Dancing On Ice – or any other show rested – they simply can't.

His revelation left followers stunned, with one replying: “So nothing is every cancelled, just trapped forever in the shadow world TV wilderness – I like this!”

A second wrote: “Interesting – so I assume this means they still hold the rights to shows they’ve rested, whereas they don’t if they’re axed?”

“Wow something new I've learned today, thanks Mr Osman,” said a third.

Flying Eze were first to reveal how Dancing On Ice was facing the axe over a decline in viewers and the ultimate decision by ITV.

In a statement, a spokesperson said: “Following another successful series earlier this year, Dancing On Ice will be rested in 2026 with no current plans for another series.

“We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the cast and crew who have worked on the show since 2006, and over the previous 17 series, for all of their hard work both on and off the ice.”
