Rory McIlroy Masters win at Augusta ‘most expensive result’ for bookies as punters pile in on career grand slam chance

Published on March 31, 2025 at 01:56 PM

A Rory McIlroy win at the Masters next week is the ‘most expensive' result for the bookmakers.

McIlroy, 35, has scooped every Major in golf during his stellar career, EXCEPT the Masters.

That's despite plenty of hurt at Augusta as he chases the career grand slam

In fact, the Northern Irish star has scooped individual titles in every month of the year barring April, when the Masters is held.

He took a four-shot lead into the final round in 2011 before carding a final round 80 to finish ten shots off the lead.

McIlroy is the second favourite for success next week and to finally seal that career grand slam, just behind world number one Scottie Scheffler in the betting.

The pair were both in the top-5 at the Houston Open last weekend, with Scheffler just one stroke behind maiden winner Min Woo Lee and McIlroy four shots behind.

Prior to the tournament, McIlroy made a flying visit to Augusta National in Georgia and told media at the event he likes to check on any subtle changes the course have made ahead of his practice rounds.

He's already racked up a whopping $9,057,558 in prize money, winning two of his five PGA Tour starts in 2025, making the cut and finishing in the top 25 in all of them and recording three top-10 finishes.

It's arguably his best run of form for some time and now the bookmakers are ducking for cover in the event he finally gets his hands on that jacket on April 13.

He's now been cut from 10/1 to 6/1 with William Hill, who report it's his shortest price since his worldwide dominance between 2012-2015.

Prices from William Hill

  • Scottie Scheffler 9/2
  • Rory McIlroy 6/1
  • Ludvig Aberg 14/1
  • Collin Morikawa 14/1
  • Jon Rahm 16/1
  • Xander Schauffele 18/1
  • Bryson DeChambeau 18/1
  • Justin Thomas 20/1
  • Joaquin Niemann 25/1

Such is his form, punters have already piled in on McIlroy to win at Augusta, with more than a quarter of ALL bets being staked on him.

In total, 26% of punts with William Hill have been for McIlroy and that's ‘by far' their worst result.

Spokesperson for William Hill, Lee Phelps, said: “We’re less than two weeks away from the first Major of the year, and the money is already pouring in for Rory McIlroy to win The Masters. He’s the most expensive result in our book and we’ve had to cut him to 6/1 from 10/1.

“The four-time Major champion is by far William Hill’s worst result, with 26% of all money staked on McIlroy to complete the career grand slam this year, and he arrives at Augusta in impressive form.

“Scottie Scheffler is predictably very popular too, and is the shortest-price player to line-up for The Masters since Tiger Woods in the 2000s. Back then, Woods was being backed at around 2/1 and was truly in a league of his own, while Scheffler is a 9/2-shot and accounts for 23% of all money staked.

“Ludvig Aberg and Robert Macintyre are also being well-supported to go well at The Masters, priced at 14/1 and 50/1 respectively.”;
