Russia-Ukraine War: Putin must be dealt with through secondary sanctions – Trump

Published on April 26, 2025 at 04:04 PM

US President Donald Trump has suggested that Russian President Vladimir Putin has to be dealt with differently through secondary sanctions amid his country's ongoing war with Ukraine.

Trump said this while accusing Putin of “tapping” him along over Ukraine peace talks.

According to him, there was no reason for Putin to be shooting missiles into civilian cities and towns over the last few days.

The US leader posted on Truth Social on Saturday: “I’m just trying to clean up the mess that was left to me by Obama and Biden, and what a mess it is.

“There was no reason for Putin to be shooting missiles into civilian areas, cities and towns, over the last few days.

“It makes me think that maybe he doesn’t want to stop the war, he’s just tapping me along and has to be dealt with differently, through “Banking”; or “Secondary Sanctions?”; Too many people are dying!!!”.

Trump's comments come after he met Ukraine’s president Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the Vatican during Pope Francis' funeral.

DAILY POST reports that Trump has been working hard to strike a peace deal to end the over three-year war between Ukraine and Russia.

However, he is yet to reach a deal as both neighbouring countries continue to attack each other.
