Seven die as migrant boat sinks off Greek island

Published on April 03, 2025 at 04:39 PM

About seven migrants including a boy, a girl and two women, died on Thursday when their boat sank off the Greek island of Lesbos.

According to Greece's coastguard, the boat was detected by a patrolling coastguard vessel at about 2 a.m. (2300 GMT) north of Lesbos.

A coastguard official said 23 migrants have so far been rescued and a search and rescue operation was still ongoing.

At the time of filing this report, it was not immediately clear how many people may have been on the boat.

DAILY POST reports that Greece, in the southeast corner of the European Union, has long been a favoured gateway to Europe for migrants and refugees from the Middle East, Africa and Asia.

In 2015 nearly 1 million people landed on its islands.

Last year, at least 54,000 migrants reached Greece, the second largest number in southern Europe behind Italy.

According to data from the UN refugee agency UNHCR, the vast majority of them arrived by sea.
