South Korea wildfires: Death toll rises to 28

Published on March 28, 2025 at 04:17 PM

Wildfires sweeping through South Korea since last Friday have killed at least 28 people.

According to local news agency Yonhap, the wildfires have also injured dozens of people and burnt about 48,000 hectares of forest.

About 38,000 residents have so far fled affected areas.

Speaking on the development, Lim Sang-seop, chief of the Korea Forest Service told Yonhap that plans have been put in place to extinguish the main flames.

“We plan to mobilise all available resources to extinguish the main flames by the end of the day,” Sang-seop said.

The fires are said to be fuelled by dry winds and a prolonged drought.

Meanwhile, wildfires are not uncommon in South Korea during dry seasons.
